Dairyville Orchard Festival - October 20, 2007

For the first time in 10 years, it looked like rain might literally dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands of festival goers who flock each year to Dairyville to meet and greet friends and neighbors, stock up on freshly harvested agricultural products, tap their toes to the tunes of local musicians, and fill up on bar-b-qued tri-tip, or slow-cooked chalupas in a corn tortilla. But overnight the wind and rain subsided, and the sun broke through just in time to give us a beautiful Festival Day! We always enjoy bringing our tractors to show at the Festival, and spending the day visiting with old friends and new. A highlight this year was a guest appearance by Laurel as "Penelope the Prune". "Penelope" had a great time introducing people to the nutritious goodness of our local "dried plums". Did you know that California produces around 99% of the United States' prunes? (And a whopping 70% of the world's crop!) Most of those are harvested right here in the Sacramento Valley, which is rich in other orchard crops as well, such as walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and pecans. We are truly blessed to live in an area so rich in agriculture and beauty. Now that's a reason to celebrate!
